ESRA has to prove its worthiness to HM Coastguard on an annual basis and with each new boat brings an increase in capability.  Limited night work and all year round availability have been added to the service at each stage of the operation.  Although the boat and its crew are regarded as competent and training is a continuous process it was decided that formal qualifications were necessary and training was undertaken to achieve the
Royal Yachting Association's (RYA) Power Boat Level 2 and Rescue Boat Coxswain's certificates together with the RYA certificate in VHF Radio Competency.

Training is undertaken on Wednesday evenings during the lighter evenings from Spring to Autumn and on Sunday afternoons.  'William B Ashplant' had become a familiar sight around Dornoch beach and Embo harbour during these times, now you have the opportunity to see 'The Tim Jarvis' as well as the 'William B Ashplant' on exercise.

All our training is undertaken to a written curriculum.  Whilst we have a fully qualified RYA Instructor as our Coxswain, currently all our examinations are undertaken at
RYA Findhorn Yacht Club

FASTA promotes powerboat training and skills development through formal and informal training, all under the guidance and qualifications of the RYA. The introductory and helm training, Levels 1 and Level 2 respectively, form the core qualifications. Intermediate, advanced and safety boat training options are also available.

For those who would like to develop their skills and experience, RFYC owns, and has access to, a number of safety boats.

A group of willing volunteers from Dornoch Lifeboat form the core of the Club’s rescue team.  They train and practise regularly in advanced boat handling, navigation, casualty handling etc, in a variety of weathers, sometimes even at night! It’s exciting, good fun, and provides a safety service for dinghy training and racing events. The team also generates great social events.
